Description: This short course is intended as a follow up to an equally short course I imparted in May 2018 at SISSA (see P. Podio-Guidugli, Continuum Thermodynamics, SISSA Springer Series, Vol. 1, Springer Nature, 2019 ISBN 978-3-030-11156-4). Firstly, I plan to present those elements of Statistical Mechanics that are indispensable preliminaries to the construction of a thermodynamics within the framework of that discipline. Secondly, I will discuss similarities and differences in vocabulary and target of continuum and statistical thermodynamics. Finally, if time allows, I will deduce the continuum energy balance on starting from a statistical discrete picture of matter.
